Antares Nuclear, a California-headquartered nuclear technology company, has successfully closed a $470 million financing round to advance its microreactor program targeting US defense installations. The investment was jointly led by Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital.
The capital infusion consists of $370 million in equity financing complemented by $100 million in debt. The investor consortium also features Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital, and Industrious Ventures among its participants.
Established in 2023, Antares maintains operational facilities across three locations: Torrance, California; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Aiken, South Carolina. The startup specializes in developing compact nuclear reactors engineered for safe, extended operation without requiring refueling.
In June, Antares achieved a significant engineering breakthrough when its Mark-0 prototype reactor reached criticality at Idaho National Laboratory, successfully initiating and maintaining a controlled nuclear fission chain reaction.
This accomplishment positioned Antares as the first private entity in over 40 years to achieve criticality with a non-light-water reactor design in the United States. While the demonstration generated thermal energy, it was not configured to produce electrical power.
Mark-1 Reactor on Track for 2027
Antares is now advancing toward its Mark-1 system, which will be engineered to generate electricity. The company projects this model will be operational by 2027.
The first installations are targeted for US Air Force bases beginning in 2028. Antares has obtained formal contracts through the Department of Defense’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program.
Last year, a Trump administration executive directive established September 30, 2028, as the deadline for the Pentagon to activate a reactor at a US military installation. Antares represents one of several contractors pursuing this objective.
The company also participates in a US Energy Department initiative designed to accelerate nuclear power deployment. Despite recent progress, the technology remains unproven at commercial scale, with no microreactors currently operational domestically.
Energy Demand Driving Nuclear Investment
An expanding cohort of nuclear technology startups is competing to commercialize small-scale reactor systems. Surging energy consumption, driven partly by artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion, has intensified market interest.
Nuclear developers are positioning their solutions as carbon-free, dependable power sources capable of addressing this demand. Microreactors offer particular advantages for isolated or security-sensitive environments such as defense installations.
According to Antares, its reactor designs enable autonomous operation without requiring on-site fuel replacement. The company’s current priority involves transitioning from laboratory validation to operational deployment.
Armed with $470 million in new funding and defined deployment milestones, Antares ranks among the most well-capitalized ventures in the microreactor sector. The company’s next critical milestone will be the Mark-1 system demonstration anticipated in the coming year.
