Shares of NANO Nuclear Energy (NNE) advanced 4% during Monday’s trading session following the announcement that AFWERX has awarded the company a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract.
The agreement focuses on the development and application of NANO Nuclear’s KRONOS MMRโข Energy System, specifically targeting energy-related challenges facing the Department of the Air Force (DAF).
Work under the contract began on July 21, 2026. Shares of NNE were up 4% following the announcement.
AFWERX serves as the U.S. Air Force’s innovation division. Working alongside the Air Force Research Laboratory, the organization has simplified the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) procedures โ accelerating timelines and eliminating bureaucratic obstacles for small companies.
The Department of the Air Force introduced its Open Topic SBIR/STTR initiative in 2018. This program expanded the scope of technological innovations eligible for Air Force funding and created additional opportunities for small business participation.
Implications of the Contract for NANO Nuclear
Chief Executive Officer James Walker described the contract as “another meaningful step” in advancing the company’s defense sector commercialization efforts.
“We now have multiple active engagements with the Department of the Air Force that demonstrate increasing confidence in our technology and technical capabilities,” Walker stated.
Company Founder and Chairman Jay Yu emphasized energy security as an escalating concern throughout U.S. military operations.
“Advanced microreactors have the potential to fundamentally change how critical installations are powered,” Yu explained.
Yu further characterized the contract award as “commercial validation” of the company’s technological development strategy.
Expanding Air Force Collaboration
According to NANO Nuclear, the contract reinforces its partnership with the DAF and creates potential avenues for future defense deployment initiatives.
The organization indicated potential expansion opportunities across additional Air Force facilities and, over time, throughout the wider Department of War infrastructure.
This marks another chapter in the company’s ongoing relationship with the Air Force. The new contract supplements what NANO Nuclear characterizes as several active collaborations already in progress.
The KRONOS MMRโข represents a microreactor platform engineered to provide energy security for strategic and geographically isolated military facilities.
SBIR Phase I contracts represent preliminary research agreements. Successful performance can lead to Phase II and Phase III contracts with expanded scope and funding.
