TLDR
- LSE 24 will open in 2027 as a separate overnight market for exchange-traded products initially.
- Trading will run from 5 p.m. until 7:50 a.m. with one scheduled processing pause nightly.
- The main London market will keep its trading hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Initial products will include funds tracking UK and US stock markets for global investors overnight.
- Longer market access follows growing competition from crypto platforms offering continuous trading and tokenized assets.
London Stock Exchange plans to launch a separate overnight trading venue in the first half of 2027, opening access to selected exchange-traded products after the main UK market closes. The project, named LSE 24, aims to serve global and retail investors seeking longer trading windows as crypto platforms and major exchanges expand access beyond standard market hours.
LSE 24 to Operate Outside Main Trading Hours
LSE 24 will operate from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, with a 30-minute pause between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for end-of-day processing. The main London Stock Exchange market will continue to trade from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., keeping the overnight venue operationally separate from the regular session.
The exchange will initially list exchange-traded products, including funds that track UK and US stock markets. LSE said the new venue would give “global investors greater flexibility to respond to market events, access liquidity across time zones and manage risk.” The company has not yet published the full product list, fee schedule or membership requirements.
The separate structure means orders placed on LSE 24 will not simply extend the daytime market. The exchange will publish further technical and operational details before launch.
Crypto Platforms Drive Demand for Longer Access
Crypto firms have raised expectations for continuous access by offering digital assets around the clock and adding stocks, funds and derivatives to their platforms. Tokenized versions of traditional financial products have also widened competition, especially among younger retail users who often expect mobile trading services to remain available outside normal exchange hours.
LSE 24 will give investors a way to trade broad market products after London’s daytime session ends. Longer access may help users respond to company announcements, economic releases and market moves in the United States or Asia without waiting for the next opening bell. The exchange has not said whether individual shares will join the venue later.
Retail investors have increasingly used crypto-linked platforms for around-the-clock access. Traditional market operators are responding by adding overnight sessions while retaining scheduled maintenance and processing periods.
Global Exchanges Prepare Extended Trading Hours
Several major exchanges are preparing longer trading schedules. Nasdaq plans to move toward 23-hour weekday trading, while Cboe has proposed a 23-hour, five-day schedule for US equities. CME Group already offers continuous trading in crypto futures and options and is considering expanded hours for other contracts.
The planned launch places London within a broader move toward near-continuous market access, although LSE 24 will not provide uninterrupted seven-day trading. The service will include a daily processing break and will remain separate from the main exchange at launch. Regulatory approvals, market-maker participation and technology testing will shape the final timetable before trading starts in 2027.
LSE plans to complete the project during the first half of 2027. Market participants will need to meet the venue’s access, technology and compliance rules.
