Shares of AeroVironment (AVAV) are changing hands at approximately $142.20 β close to the 52-week low of $135.20 β following Monday’s announcement providing expanded details on a $117.3 million U.S. Army procurement for the company’s P550 unmanned aircraft. The defense contractor maintains a market capitalization of roughly $7.17 billion.
The award is not a fresh development. The Department of Defense initially revealed the contract on March 20 as a firm-fixed-price procurement for P550 Long Range Reconnaissance platforms. Monday’s release provided operational specifics: 82 units ordered under a Basic Ordering Agreement facilitated by the Army’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Marketplace.
The P550 represents a battery-operated Group 2 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle. The platform accommodates payloads reaching 15 pounds and delivers endurance of up to five hours per flight.
A distinguishing operational feature is the system’s rapid field reconfiguration capability. Personnel can exchange payloads and power cells in less than five minutes without requiring specialized tools.
The drone supports diverse operational requirements: intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, precision targeting, electronic warfare operations, and communications relay functions across aerial, terrestrial, and naval domains.
CEO Wahid Nawabi emphasized that the P550 is engineered for operational flexibility in challenging environments, providing maneuver units with rapid mission-specific reconfiguration capabilities.
The procurement was executed via a competitive Call for Solutions mechanism β reflecting the Army’s initiative to accelerate commercial unmanned system deployment beyond conventional acquisition timelines.
Full-Rate Production Achievement for P550
This contract signifies the initial full-rate production acquisition of the P550 system, advancing beyond previous developmental or limited procurement stages.
The order supports the Army’s Battalion Reconnaissance initiative, designed to expand surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities at battalion echelons.
AeroVironment developed the P550 utilizing a modular open systems architecture. This design philosophy enables integration of third-party sensors, communication links, and mission software into the airframe.
