Alibaba Group Holding introduced a preview version of Qwen3.8 Max, its latest flagship large language model. The company said the model has 2.4 trillion parameters and is available to developers through Token Plan, Qoder, and QoderWork.
Alibaba described Qwen3.8 Max as “one of the most powerful” AI models available today. The company also said it believes the model ranks second only to Anthropic’s Fable 5, placing it near the front of the global AI race.
The model is expected to move toward an open-weight release soon. That approach may help developers test, build, and compare Alibaba’s AI system against other major models across coding, reasoning, and knowledge tasks.
The launch followed Moonshot AI’s release of Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter Chinese AI model. Moonshot said Kimi K3 can compete with leading U.S. systems, adding to investor attention around China’s AI progress.
BABA Stock Gains as AI Race Heats Up
U.S.-listed Alibaba shares rose nearly 4% before Monday’s market open after the Qwen3.8 Max announcement. The move came even though BABA stock remains down more than 26% year to date.
Investor Michael Burry reacted to the launch and said, “Alibaba responds to Kimi with 2.4 trillion parameter Qwen3.8-Max-Preview.” He added that Alibaba says the model is better than every frontier model except Anthropic’s.
Martin Varsavsky said China’s AI push is also about pricing and developer reach. He said, “China understands that in AI, having a good model isn’t enough.”
Varsavsky added, “The race isn’t won by whoever writes the most sophisticated regulation.” He said wider developer access may matter more than strict policy frameworks.
Apple Approval Adds Another Catalyst
Alibaba’s AI outlook also received support from Apple’s China plans. A recent report said Apple secured regulatory approval to use Alibaba’s Qwen AI inside Apple Intelligence for users in China.
The approval allows Apple to move forward with AI features for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS in its largest smartphone market. Alibaba said Qwen will support text and image recognition and generation features across Apple devices in China.
Retail sentiment around BABA improved from bearish to neutral over 24 hours, while message volume surged more than 628%. Traders focused on the Qwen launch, Apple approval, and Alibaba’s wider AI ecosystem.
The next key test will be the broader open-weight release. Developers and investors will watch whether Qwen3.8 Max can maintain strong performance outside the preview phase.
