TLDR
- Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, revealed that Toncoin will revert to its original GRAM branding from the initial whitepaper.
- While the blockchain network retains the TON designation, the token ticker will undergo modification.
- The complete transition process is projected to span approximately three weeks.
- Following the announcement, TON experienced an 11% price increase, reaching approximately $2.10.
- The rebrand represents the fourth milestone in Durov’s seven-phase “TON Great Again” strategic roadmap.
Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, revealed through his official Telegram channel that Toncoin, the blockchain’s native cryptocurrency, will undergo a rebrand to GRAM. This nomenclature was initially employed in the network’s inaugural whitepaper before regulatory complications emerged with United States authorities.
“We’re returning to our roots — and starting a new chapter,” Durov stated in his announcement. He indicated the migration process would require approximately three weeks to finalize.
The blockchain network will maintain its TON branding. The modification affects exclusively the token designation.
Following the announcement, TON experienced an upward surge exceeding 11%, based on TradingView analytics. At press time, the token was exchanging hands near $2.10. Additionally, it has appreciated approximately 19% during the previous seven days and roughly 60% throughout the past month.

A Seven-Phase Strategic Initiative
The rebrand represents more than an isolated decision. Durov characterized it as the fourth phase within a comprehensive seven-stage program he’s labeled “TON Great Again.”

The initial phase delivered a substantial network enhancement that accelerated TON’s performance tenfold, with block generation rates climbing sixfold. In subsequent developments, Durov disclosed that transaction costs had been reduced to nearly negligible amounts.
He further announced that Telegram would supplant the TON Foundation as the primary entity guiding the blockchain’s development, with Telegram assuming the position of the network’s principal validator. This transformation was assigned a two-to-three week implementation timeline when unveiled in the previous month.
Regulatory Background With the SEC
The GRAM designation carries significant historical context. Durov initially developed the TON network before regulatory pressure compelled him to withdraw following legal action initiated by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC has subsequently dismissed that litigation.
With a more receptive regulatory environment toward cryptocurrency currently established in the United States, Telegram has been positioning itself to assume a more substantial and direct role within the TON ecosystem.
TON maintained its gains on the announcement day, even while the wider cryptocurrency market experienced downward pressure. Bitcoin dropped beneath the $71,000 threshold during the same trading session.
The token’s approximately 60% appreciation over the preceding month suggests a transformation in market perception regarding the TON ecosystem in recent trading periods.
