On Tuesday, Andrej Karpathy, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence research, revealed his decision to join Anthropic. The announcement came through a post shared on X.
“I’ve joined Anthropic,” Karpathy stated. “I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D.”
Karpathy holds co-founder status at OpenAI, where his tenure as a research scientist spanned from 2015 through 2017. Following that chapter, he assumed the director of AI position at Tesla, serving in that capacity between 2017 and 2022.
Career Trajectory in Artificial Intelligence
During his time at Tesla, Karpathy oversaw the computer vision division responsible for Tesla Autopilot development. His responsibilities also encompassed the training and implementation of Tesla’s proprietary inference chip for customer applications.
In 2023, he rejoined OpenAI to spearhead a team dedicated to midtraining processes and synthetic data creation. His departure from that position occurred in 2024.
Karpathy completed his doctoral studies in computer science at Stanford University. Anthropic has characterized him as among the world’s foremost AI researchers.
He has also gained recognition for introducing the concept of “vibe coding,” terminology that has achieved widespread adoption throughout technology communities.
Role and Responsibilities at Anthropic
Within Anthropic, Karpathy becomes part of the pretraining division. This group executes the extensive training procedures that establish Claude’s fundamental capabilities and knowledge infrastructure.
He will establish a dedicated team concentrated on utilizing Claude to accelerate pretraining research initiatives. This represents a critical domain within AI advancement.
Karpathy emphasized his continued commitment to educational pursuits. He intends to resume that work when circumstances permit.
Anthropic develops Claude, its principal AI assistant product. The organization operates in direct competition with OpenAI within the large language model marketplace.
Following its latest capital raise, Anthropic currently carries an approximate valuation of $61.5 billion. This figure positions the company above OpenAI and approaches Tesla’s present market capitalization.
Reports suggest the company is preparing for a public offering within the current year, potentially making it among the most anticipated IPOs in the technology sector.
Karpathy’s transition to Anthropic reflects a broader industry trend of elite researchers moving between leading AI laboratories.
His recruitment strengthens Anthropic’s research roster during a period of operational expansion for the company.
