Key Highlights
- Survey Copter, an Airbus subsidiary, has been chosen by the European Defence Agency to lead the M2UAS unmanned aircraft initiative.
- The 48-month agreement includes approximately €1.1 million in total funding.
- The initiative seeks to enhance the operational versatility of the CAPA-X unmanned aerial platform.
- An initial 12-month assessment period will examine military requirements and determine technical pathways.
- The CAPA-X platform features a 120 kg airframe, 100 km communication range, and 20 kg payload capacity.
The European Defence Agency has awarded Airbus’s Survey Copter division a significant contract to advance its CAPA-X unmanned aircraft capabilities.
This agreement is structured within the Multi Mission Unmanned Aircraft System initiative, designated as M2UAS. The program spans four years and carries an estimated budget of €1.1 million.
The CAPA-X represents a proven technological solution. With a 120 kg operational weight, the system accommodates payloads reaching 20 kg, maintains connectivity across 100 km, and achieves flight durations extending to 10 hours.
The platform’s flexible architecture enables customization for varied operational scenarios, spanning both defense and civilian applications across different regulatory frameworks.
The M2UAS initiative leverages this proven foundation. The objective centers on expanding the platform’s adaptability to address an increasingly diverse mission portfolio.
Proposed applications encompass intelligence gathering and observation, electromagnetic warfare capabilities, airborne payload delivery systems, and autonomous aerial refueling operations.
The program commences with a year-long evaluation stage. This initial period focuses on understanding present and emerging military specifications, evaluating technical obstacles, and establishing development strategies.
These preliminary findings will subsequently inform technical decisions throughout subsequent project stages.
Details of the European Defence Agreement
Christophe Canguilhem, who directs the CAPA-X program at Airbus Helicopters, noted the platform’s features align perfectly with M2UAS objectives.
He characterized the technology as providing a “scalable operational solution” adaptable to military force requirements.
Airbus positions the EDA’s decision as validation of Survey Copter’s proficiency in tactical unmanned systems development.
Survey Copter operates under Airbus Helicopters, which forms part of the consolidated Airbus organization.
Strategic Vision for Unmanned Systems
Beyond immediate enhancements, the M2UAS program targets the establishment of next-generation drone architectures — transcending simple CAPA-X improvements to establish comprehensive guidelines for unmanned platform engineering and operational deployment.
The initiative supports the advancement of European technological sovereignty in the unmanned aerial vehicle sector.
Shares of Airbus trade on the Paris exchange with ticker symbol AIR and recorded a 1.19% gain when the contract was publicly disclosed.
