Claude Introduces Memory Capabilities and Migration Tools Amid Explosive User Growth Following Government Conflict
In response to skyrocketing demand triggered by a high-profile disagreement with federal authorities, Anthropic has made its memory functionality accessible to all Claude users without requiring a paid subscription.
Previously restricted to premium subscribers, this memory capability enables Claude to retain information from earlier conversations. This brings Claude to parity with ChatGPT, which has offered comparable features to its free tier users.
Anthropic simultaneously introduced an innovative migration tool designed to simplify the transition for users of competing AI platforms. The feature supports seamless transfer of conversation histories from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot through an intuitive copy-paste interface.
The migration process requires users to request their current AI assistant to generate an export in code block format. This exported data is then inserted into Claude’s Memory section within the settings panel, where users select “Add to memory.”
Processing imported data may require up to 24 hours. Once complete, users can audit everything Claude has retained about them, with full control to modify or delete any information.
Notably, ChatGPT hasn’t introduced a comparable migration feature for incoming users. While Google is developing similar functionality, it remains unavailable to the public.
These feature releases coincide with heightened tensions between Anthropic and the Department of Defense. The company declined to permit its AI technology for widespread domestic surveillance operations or fully autonomous military weapons systems.
In retaliation, President Trump issued directives requiring all federal departments to discontinue Claude usage. The Pentagon subsequently designated Anthropic as a supply-chain security concern.
Claude Rises to App Store Summit Following Federal Agency Dispute
The controversy appears to have inadvertently boosted Claude’s popularity. The application surged to the top position in Apple’s App Store free app rankings, displacing ChatGPT from the leading spot.
Claude’s free active user population has expanded by more than 60% since the beginning of the year. New account registrations have multiplied by four during this timeframe.
This dramatic user influx triggered a service interruption on Monday. Anthropic acknowledged the multi-hour downtime, attributing it to “unprecedented demand.” Engineers restored full functionality by mid-morning Eastern time.
Concurrently, OpenAI revealed intentions to integrate its AI systems within the Defense Department’s classified computing infrastructure. This announcement prompted some ChatGPT users to advocate for boycotting the platform.
Understanding the Chat History Migration Process
Users initiate the import by navigating to Claude’s settings interface and locating the Capabilities menu. Within this section, they access Memory and select “Start import.”
After inserting the code block exported from their previous chatbot, Claude begins analyzing and incorporating the data. Users can verify imported information by accessing “See what Claude learned about you.”
Anthropic has confirmed compatibility with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. The import functionality is currently live for the entire user base.
