Alternative investment platform Fundrise and blockchain-based equity platform xStocks have unveiled a collaboration to tokenize the Fundrise Innovation Fund. The digital asset, designated as VCXx, will become available for trading on xStocks in the near future.
The Fundrise Innovation Fund trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol VCX. This closed-end investment vehicle provides shareholders with indirect ownership of private equity positions in several prominent technology enterprises, notably SpaceX, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Databricks.
VCX commenced trading on March 19 at an initial price of $31 per share. Strong investor appetite drove shares to an intraday peak of $575 shortly after the listing.
The stock experienced significant volatility following publication of a critical analysis by Citron Research on Thursday. The short-seller report highlighted that Fundrise Advisors LLC had previously settled SEC allegations in 2023 concerning undisclosed paid promotions, and suggested regulatory authorities should investigate potential ongoing influencer marketing arrangements related to VCX.
By week’s end, shares had retreated to $173, representing a nearly 34% single-day decline on Friday, followed by an additional 5.9% drop in extended trading. Fundrise CEO Ben Miller responded to CNBC, characterizing the criticism as a baseless attack and standing by the fund’s investment strategy.
Understanding the Tokenization Process
Through the creation of VCXx, xStocks and Fundrise aim to democratize access to private market investments for a wider international investor base. Traditionally, gaining exposure to late-stage private companies held within the VCX portfolio required institutional status or significant wealth.
The VCXx token functions seamlessly across multiple wallet applications, blockchain protocols, and trading venues. Additionally, it enables advanced use cases including serving as collateral and participation in lending arrangements within decentralized finance ecosystems.
xStocks operates on technology infrastructure provided by Payward, the corporate entity behind cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. The platform currently offers more than 100 tokenized representations of stocks and exchange-traded funds, having processed over $25 billion in cumulative transaction volume across its global user base of 100,000+ holders.
Payward recently revealed a collaborative initiative with Nasdaq focused on developing bridges between conventional equity markets and blockchain-based systems, complementing this VCX tokenization announcement.
Tokenized Equity Market Reaches $1 Billion Threshold
This partnership between xStocks and Fundrise arrives as the tokenized stock sector achieves a significant benchmark. According to tracking data from RWA.xyz, the aggregate value of blockchain-based equity tokens crossed the $1 billion mark earlier this month.
Market concentration remains high among two primary platforms. Ondo commands approximately 58% market share, while xStocks represents about 24% of the sector, based on RWA.xyz analytics.
A March 2025 analysis published by Foresight Ventures indicated the market is experiencing consolidation around these established players, attributing this trend to regulatory compliance challenges, liquidity network effects, and varying approaches to the tokenization process.
The VCXx token is scheduled to launch on the xStocks platform in the coming days, according to current timelines.
