SoftBank Group introduced an advanced artificial intelligence-powered cybersecurity platform in Tokyo this week, leveraging OpenAI’s technology to bolster Japanese corporate defenses against digital threats.
Dubbed “Patching as a Service,” the platform focuses on Japan’s 3,000 largest corporations managing essential infrastructure — including aviation facilities, energy grids, and transit systems.
Deployment of the platform happens through SB OAI Japan, the equally-owned partnership between SoftBank Corp and OpenAI established last November. This collaboration was designed to build and exclusively distribute AI solutions within the Japanese marketplace.
CEO Masayoshi Son delivered stark warnings about the threat landscape. He likened Japan’s present cyber vulnerability to confronting automatic weapons while equipped only for conventional warfare.
“We want to create a system where we will be able to defend critical Japanese infrastructure,” Son stated during the Tokyo announcement.
“I feel it is our duty,” he emphasized.
Platform Functionality Explained
The solution operates through a two-phase approach: initially identifying vulnerabilities within corporate systems, followed by determining necessary patches. Son consistently described cybercriminals as “the bad guys” during his presentation.
SoftBank Corp CEO Junichi Miyakawa revealed the current deployment team comprises approximately 50 individuals, with aggressive expansion plans targeting 1,000 personnel.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was originally scheduled for in-person attendance but participated through brief video remarks instead. He attributed his absence to the unexpected early arrival of his daughter. OpenAI Chief Research Officer Mark Chen represented the company on-site.
Strategic Investment Partnership
SoftBank ranks among OpenAI’s most significant financial backers. The company’s aggregate committed investment in OpenAI totals $64.6 billion extending through the end of 2026.
This cybersecurity platform represents another milestone in an expanding alliance. The organizations have developed AI system integration offerings for Japanese enterprises since establishing SB OAI Japan last year.
Last week, U.S. authorities restricted access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for foreign nationals, invoking national security rationale — a development highlighting the increasingly complex intersection of artificial intelligence and security worldwide.
SoftBank Corp (9434.T) and SoftBank Group (9984.T) both took part in Tuesday’s enterprise event in Tokyo.
