Rivian’s first-quarter 2026 vehicle deliveries reached 10,365 units, surpassing Wall Street’s projection of 9,678, based on Visible Alpha consensus data. Manufacturing output totaled 10,236 vehicles, likewise exceeding the anticipated 9,852 units.
This represents a significant shift in trajectory. During Q1 2025, Rivian’s deliveries stood at only 8,640 vehicles, while production reached 14,611 — creating a disconnect that suggested inventory accumulation during that period.
The stronger delivery performance follows challenges in the latter part of 2025. When the $7,500 federal EV tax incentive lapsed in September, effective vehicle prices increased, causing demand to soften. The December quarter saw declining deliveries as a consequence.
Market conditions have since shifted favorably. Following the escalation of the Iran conflict in February, U.S. gasoline prices have surged significantly, which industry observers believe could accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. This trend stands to benefit both Rivian and Tesla.
Despite outperforming expectations, shares declined 1.2% during premarket hours. RIVN has fallen over 24% year-to-date in 2026, while short interest represents 11.8% of available shares.
R2 SUV Rollout Imminent
The forthcoming R2 model represents a critical component of Rivian’s expansion strategy. Customer deliveries are scheduled to commence this spring. The base-trim R2 variant, with pricing starting around $45,000, will arrive next year and compete directly with Tesla’s Model Y Premium, which carries a $44,990 starting price.
According to Rivian, the R2 is projected to attract a significantly broader customer demographic compared to its existing R1T and R1S vehicle lineup.
Strategic Uber Collaboration Provides Boost
Rivian unveiled a comprehensive partnership with Uber last month. The arrangement includes an investment of up to $1.25 billion from Uber, along with plans to integrate fully autonomous R2 SUVs into Uber’s robotaxi fleet beginning in 2028.
This strategic alliance provides Rivian with both essential funding and a clear commercial pathway for its autonomous vehicle initiatives.
Rivian maintained its full-year 2026 delivery forecast of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles. The company’s complete first-quarter financial results are scheduled for release on April 30 following market close.
