Wall Street is turning its attention to Rivian (RIVN) stock as a crucial product launch nears, with TD Cowen elevating its stance to Buy mere days before the automaker unveils its R2 SUV to the public.
TD Cowen analyst Itay Michaeli increased his price objective to $20 — marking his second positive adjustment within a month. His initial move came on February 14, when he lifted the target from $13 to $17, followed by Tuesday’s additional $3 increase. With Monday’s close at $15.87, this new target suggests approximately 26% potential appreciation.
The catalyst is clear. Rivian plans to publicly showcase the R2 SUV on March 12 during the SXSW 2026 Festival in Austin, Texas. This presentation has been a focal point for market participants for several months.

RIVN shares have retreated roughly 20% since the start of 2025. The equity touched a 2025 bottom of $12.50 in April amid tariff concerns, then rallied to a yearly peak of $22.45 in late December. Trading has remained relatively stable in the $15 zone throughout the past month.
According to TD Cowen’s analysis, the R2 could achieve annual sales volumes ranging from 212,000 to 335,000 units once fully ramped — significantly exceeding current Wall Street consensus estimates for 2027. The firm believes the risk-reward profile appears favorable at present valuation levels ahead of the launch event.
Why the R2 Is a Big Deal
With a price point around $45,000, the R2 undercuts the company’s current R1T and R1S offerings by approximately $30,000–$40,000. Beyond affordability for consumers, Rivian indicates the R2 will carry lower manufacturing costs, utilizing fewer electronic control units, simplified wiring architecture, and larger structural castings.
This dual advantage — accessible pricing combined with reduced production expenses — explains Wall Street’s heightened interest. Rivian’s vehicle output declined from 57,232 units in 2023 to 42,284 in 2025, a decrease the company links to supply chain disruptions, reduced EV incentives, and intensifying market competition.
The R2 targets a substantially broader customer base. Rivian intends to leverage both its forthcoming Georgia manufacturing site and existing Illinois facility to expand capacity, aiming to triple overall production capability by 2028.
Current revenue for 2025 stands at $5.4 billion. Wall Street forecasters anticipate this figure could reach $16.3 billion by 2028 assuming successful R2 production scaling. Adjusted EBITDA is projected to achieve profitability during that timeframe.
Where the Stock Stands
Trading around $15, RIVN shares remain over 80% below their 2021 initial public offering price and represent less than three times estimated 2025 revenues. The stock advanced to $17 in mid-February following stronger-than-anticipated Q4 earnings and positive early R2 media impressions.
Rivian maintains additional products in development. The premium R3 SUV is slated for late 2026 or early 2027 arrival, with the R2 serving to establish brand recognition and manufacturing momentum before that introduction.
TD Cowen previously maintained a more reserved position, reducing its target to $13 in August 2025 while identifying Rivian’s AI Day and R2 debut as the primary near-term catalysts deserving attention.
The R2 presentation is now just 48 hours away.
