Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz has recalled selling 40,000 ETH when the token traded at $1.05. He described feeling like an “investment genius” at the time of the transaction.
Schwartz shared that he had acquired the tokens at $0.311 each. The sale resulted in proceeds of about $42,000. This represented a return of 321% on his initial purchase.
Early Ethereum Participation and Sale Decision
Schwartz was personally invited by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to take part in the project’s early launch. He said he wanted to support the initiative and contribute to its development.
To participate, Schwartz used 20 BTC, which allowed him to acquire the 40,000 ETH. At that time, Ethereum was still in its infancy, and the token had limited market exposure.
After the token’s price rose to $1.05, Schwartz decided to sell his entire holdings. He later recalled that the return felt substantial at the time. However, shortly after his sale, Ethereum’s price moved sharply higher and entered a prolonged rally.
The trade has since become a reference point within crypto discussions about timing and long-term holding strategies. Schwartz’s comments provide insight into early market conditions and decision-making processes.
Ripple Expands XRPL Ecosystem Funding
Alongside Schwartz’s remarks, Ripple has outlined updates regarding support for the XRP Ledger ecosystem. According to company disclosures, ecosystem programs have backed nearly 200 projects since 2021.
Funding has covered sectors such as payments, decentralized finance, tokenization, artificial intelligence, gaming, and enterprise finance. Support has been delivered through non-equity grants, hackathons, builder bounties, XRPL grants, and an accelerator program.
Ripple confirmed that 2026 will bring a structural shift. While Ripple-backed initiatives will continue, independent organizations and venture partners will assume a larger role in funding activities.
To streamline access, Ripple plans to launch a single XRPL funding hub. The portal will provide centralized information on grants, accelerators, and ecosystem programs offered by participating entities.
XRP Ledger Role in Institutional Settlement
Ripple’s broader strategy focuses on institutional-grade blockchain infrastructure. Since 2025, financial institutions have sought solutions that combine speed with reliability in digital asset markets.
Ripple’s framework envisions the XRP Ledger facilitating on-chain credit lines and faster settlement processes. The system aims to enable earlier netting and increase transparency for institutional participants.
By using the XRP Ledger’s settlement speed, transactions can be completed in about three seconds. Ripple’s CEO reiterated this capability during discussions with bankers in 2025.
