On Thursday, OpenAI revealed its plans to acquire Astral, a well-regarded startup specializing in open source development tools for Python programmers.
The engineering talent from Astral will be integrated into OpenAI’s team developing Codex, the company’s artificial intelligence-powered coding platform. OpenAI has not revealed the acquisition price.
Within the Python development ecosystem, Astral has established itself as a trusted name. The company’s suite of tools focuses on enhancing performance and dependability for developers working with Python.
In a company blog post, Charlie Marsh, who founded and leads Astral as CEO, emphasized the company’s mission remains unchanged. “To make programming more productive. To build tools that radically change what it feels like to build software,” Marsh explained.
Marsh provided assurance that Astral’s open source tool portfolio will remain actively maintained following the completion of the acquisition.
OpenAI introduced its Codex offering last year and rolled out a dedicated desktop application earlier this year. According to company metrics, Codex currently serves more than 2 million active users on a weekly basis.
This user count reflects a threefold expansion since January began. Over the identical timeframe, actual usage metrics have climbed fivefold.
Battle for Developer Mindshare: OpenAI vs Anthropic and Cursor
The market for AI-enhanced coding solutions has experienced explosive expansion throughout the past twelve months. OpenAI finds itself in direct competition with Anthropic, whose Claude Code platform has captured significant developer interest.
Another formidable competitor is Cursor, which has cultivated a dedicated user base within the software engineering community. OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s market presence and narrow the competitive distance.
The Astral transaction remains contingent upon standard closing requirements, which include obtaining regulatory clearances.
This acquisition fits within OpenAI’s broader strategic emphasis on growth through acquisitions. Last December, the company brought aboard Albert Lee from Google to oversee corporate development initiatives.
OpenAI’s Acquisition Momentum
In May 2025, OpenAI completed a $6.4 billion purchase of io, Jony Ive’s AI hardware venture. More recently this month, the company announced plans to acquire Promptfoo, a cybersecurity-focused startup.
January saw OpenAI acquire Torch, a company operating in the healthcare technology sector. The Astral purchase represents another addition to this expanding portfolio.
Microsoft serves as a major backer of OpenAI. The organization has been diversifying its product offerings as competitive pressures intensify throughout the artificial intelligence industry.
The Astral acquisition represents a calculated effort to fortify OpenAI’s competitive standing within the AI-driven developer tools segment.
The fivefold surge in Codex usage since the beginning of January represents the most current growth metric OpenAI has publicly disclosed for the platform.
