The U.K.-based startup specializes in artificial intelligence infrastructure development. The company provides networking, storage, and computing resources required for AI systems.
Nscale has formed partnerships with several leading technology firms. The company works with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Microsoft on various projects.
Major AI Infrastructure Projects
The funding comes as Nscale expands its operations across multiple regions. The company plans to develop data centers in Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
Last week, Nscale announced its collaboration with Nvidia and OpenAI for Stargate U.K. This project will establish AI infrastructure in the United Kingdom using tens of thousands of Nvidia graphics processing units.
The company is also working with Microsoft on another major initiative. Together, they are developing what Nscale describes as the U.K.’s largest AI supercomputer.
Norwegian industrial group Aker made a substantial investment in the funding round. The company invested $285 million to acquire a 9.3% stake in Nscale.
Norwegian Partnership Expansion
Aker’s investment builds on an existing partnership formed two months earlier. The collaboration includes Aker, Nscale, and OpenAI working together on Stargate Norway.
The Stargate Norway project involves building a data center in northern Norway. This facility is expected to house 100,000 Nvidia GPUs when completed.
The Aker-Nscale joint venture is scheduled to close in the fourth quarter. Both companies will hold equal ownership in this partnership arrangement.
Aker has the potential to increase its stake in Nscale to 12.2% through future earn-outs. The Norwegian company may also convert its stake into additional Nscale shares during a potential future IPO.
The funding round was oversubscribed, indicating strong investor interest in AI infrastructure development. Aker has positioned itself as one of the largest shareholders in Nscale through this investment.
OpenAI and Microsoft are expected to be initial customers for the joint venture projects. The Stargate Norway data center project represents a major expansion of AI computing capacity in the Nordic region.
