TLDR
- Netflix has purchased InterPositive, Ben Affleck’s AI-driven filmmaking technology venture launched in 2022.
- The acquisition’s financial details remain undisclosed.
- InterPositive develops artificial intelligence solutions for production issues including lighting inconsistencies and missing footage.
- Ben Affleck assumes a senior advisory position at Netflix as part of the transaction.
- The deal represents Netflix’s first company purchase since withdrawing from the Warner Bros Discovery acquisition competition.
The streaming industry leader made a strategic announcement this week, combining Hollywood prestige with cutting-edge technology. Netflix revealed Thursday that it has completed the purchase of InterPositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking platform co-created by Oscar-winning filmmaker and performer Ben Affleck.
Neither party disclosed the purchase price or transaction value.
Affleck established InterPositive in 2022. The venture develops artificial intelligence-driven solutions tailored specifically for motion picture production environments.
The platform’s primary technology revolves around an artificial intelligence system trained to recognize visual coherence and editorial continuity. It addresses real-world production obstacles — including incomplete footage, lighting problems, and consistency errors.
“We’ve incorporated safeguards to preserve creative vision, ensuring these resources support responsible innovation while maintaining artists’ control over creative choices,” Affleck explained in an official statement.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria reinforced this philosophy. “Our belief is that emerging technologies should enhance artistic possibilities, not limit them or substitute for the contributions of writers, directors, performers, and production teams,” she stated.
Affleck, widely recognized for directing the Academy Award-winning feature Argo, will assume his new role as a senior advisor at Netflix.
Netflix’s First Major Purchase in Recent Period
This transaction represents Netflix’s first company acquisition since withdrawing from contention for Warner Bros Discovery’s production and distribution properties. Paramount Skydance eventually secured those assets with a more favorable proposal.
The purchase indicates Netflix is prioritizing AI-enhanced production capabilities over traditional content catalog or studio acquisitions.
Entertainment Industry’s Evolving AI Perspective
Hollywood’s approach to artificial intelligence has transformed rapidly. Just recently, concerns about workforce displacement and copyright issues were paramount in industry discussions — particularly during the 2023 strikes involving writers and performers.
Currently, major studios are adopting a contrasting approach.
Last year, Disney revealed plans to permit OpenAI access to intellectual property from Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel universes for integration into the company’s Sora AI video generation platform.
Netflix’s purchase of InterPositive represents comparable thinking — utilizing AI as a production enhancement tool rather than a creative substitute.
InterPositive’s platform incorporates deliberate limitations. The artificial intelligence operates within established cinematic principles while accommodating the unpredictable nature of actual production environments, ensuring human creators maintain ultimate authority over artistic decisions.
Affleck’s participation extends beyond the transaction. His transition to senior advisor at Netflix ensures his continued involvement in the technology’s evolution within one of the planet’s largest streaming services.
Netflix stock increased 0.17% on Thursday.
