Key Takeaways
- HP introduced HP IQ, an on-device artificial intelligence assistant that processes information locally without cloud connectivity
- The AI assistant appears as an on-screen text interface and can examine personal documents including PDFs and presentation files
- Initial access launches Spring 2026, with expanded availability throughout the latter half of 2026
- HPQ shares have declined 15% year-to-date and 34% over the trailing twelve months
- HP’s artificial intelligence initiative intensifies expectations for Apple to unveil compelling AI enhancements at WWDC in June
HP Inc. revealed HP IQ during its annual Imagine conference in New York City on Tuesday — a locally-processed AI platform engineered to enhance productivity around documents and video conferences.
The assistant manifests as a text input field positioned at the screen’s top. Users can query it about their personal files — including PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, and various document formats — and receive comprehensive responses. The system also recommends actionable follow-up tasks.
Privacy protection stands as the central value proposition. HP IQ operates completely on-device, ensuring that all processed information remains local and never transmits to cloud servers. This approach specifically targets enterprises managing confidential or proprietary content.
“The two standout applications are document examination and meeting recap functionality, all without cloud dependency,” explained Patrick Moorhead, founder and CEO of Moor Insights & Strategy. “For organizations handling proprietary data or confidential discussions, this represents a significant advantage.”
HP IQ leverages a 20-billion-parameter foundation model and will launch with the upcoming HP EliteBook X G2 PC generation. Initial early access begins Spring 2026, followed by a limited Summer 2026 expansion to select notebooks, desktop systems, and Poly Studio Video Bars. Comprehensive market availability is targeted for the year’s second half.
The Imagine conference also showcased a comprehensive lineup of commercial hardware — featuring the EliteBook 6 G2q, EliteBook 8 G2 lineup, ProBook 4 G2, and EliteDesk 8 G2 series. The premium EliteBook 6 G2q utilizes Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus chipsets, achieving up to 85 TOPS of NPU throughput and extending battery duration up to 28 hours.
HP has established partnerships with more than 100 software providers to enable HP IQ’s local AI functionalities, including collaborations with Rakuten, Goodnotes, and Guidde.
Will AI Innovation Boost HPQ Performance?
Market observers remain measured regarding the announcement’s immediate impact on share performance. Tom Mainelli, Group Vice President of Device and Consumer Research at IDC, expressed approval of the strategic direction while maintaining reservations about near-term outcomes.
“User adoption of these emerging technologies is still uncertain,” Mainelli commented to Barron’s. “However, I appreciate that HP is pushing innovative boundaries.”
The equity has experienced significant headwinds. Compounding the price deterioration, HP has confronted margin compression from escalating memory component expenses and an unanticipated CEO transition in February. Tuesday’s product launch doesn’t immediately address either fundamental challenge.
Pressure Shifts to Apple
HP’s strategic advances are redirecting attention toward Apple, which announced Monday that its Worldwide Developers Conference reconvenes June 8 and will feature AI enhancements across Apple ecosystems.
Moorhead observed that HP’s advancement could amplify examination of Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy. Should HP IQ achieve meaningful user adoption, questions regarding Apple’s absence of comparable on-device capabilities may intensify.
To date, Apple has successfully deflected substantial AI-related criticism, maintaining consistent iPhone demand and expanding services revenue. Whether this protective buffer endures through June remains uncertain.
Apple’s WWDC is slated for June 8, 2026.
