BMW has officially taken the wraps off its all-electric i3 sedan Wednesday, representing the second vehicle built upon the automaker’s cutting-edge Neue Klasse architecture.

This introduction represents a clear competitive challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 range, with BMW making no attempt to disguise its intentions.
The i3 debuts with one configuration — the 50 xDrive model — featuring dual electric motors delivering all-wheel drive and 469 horsepower. While Tesla’s Model 3 Performance generates 510 horsepower, giving it a slight edge in raw output, BMW counters with a different advantage.
The German automaker projects 900 kilometers of range under European WLTP testing protocols, which converts to approximately 440 miles using EPA measurements. This substantially surpasses the Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309 EPA-rated miles, and even outdoes the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capability.
Additionally, the i3 can replenish roughly 250 miles of driving range within just 10 minutes at a charging station, powered by an 800-volt electrical architecture and BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. The sprint to 60 mph is projected at approximately four seconds.
Cabin Features and Tech Integration
BMW has reimagined the interior space with a 40-inch panoramic screen spanning the entire dashboard width. The refreshed iDrive interface operates on BMW’s latest Heart of Joy computing architecture, which the manufacturer claims delivers performance 10 times quicker than prior generations.
The new i3 offers greater physical dimensions than the current 3 Series — increased length, width, and height — while its styling language offers a glimpse at the forthcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series appearance.
US market pricing remains unofficial, though BMW is projected to position the i3 near the $55,000 mark. This places it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximately $47,490 starting price, while matching the Model 3 Performance at $54,990.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Availability
Production launches at BMW’s Munich manufacturing facility in August 2026. European customers can expect deliveries beginning fall 2026, however American buyers face a longer wait — stateside deliveries aren’t anticipated until 2027.
BMW has announced that additional configurations will arrive subsequently, including a fully electric M3 performance variant. Both the i3 sedan and iX3 SUV constitute elements of an extensive Neue Klasse expansion that encompasses four additional forthcoming models.
BMW has characterized the Neue Klasse initiative as the most substantial financial commitment in the company’s entire history.
Wall Street analysts maintain a Hold consensus rating on BAMXF stock, with five Buy recommendations, five Hold ratings, and three Sell ratings issued over the previous three months. The consensus price target stands at $104.23, suggesting approximately 14.3% potential upside from present trading levels.
BMW.DE declined 0.20% Wednesday, while Tesla (TSLA) dropped 0.38%.
