Cupertino’s technology powerhouse is advancing development on its inaugural AI-enabled smart glasses, currently evaluating no fewer than four unique frame configurations, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The frame lineup features a substantial rectangular profile reminiscent of Ray-Ban’s iconic Wayfarer silhouette, a more streamlined rectangular variant, plus two oval or circular alternatives — one in a larger size and another more compact. The sleeker rectangular configuration reportedly mirrors eyewear frequently worn by Chief Executive Tim Cook.
The company intends to provide several color alternatives, encompassing black, ocean blue, and light brown hues. Frame construction will employ acetate, a superior material choice offering greater durability and refinement compared to conventional plastic utilized by rival products.
The eyewear carries the internal designation N50.
Innovative Camera Architecture Sets New Standard
Among the more noteworthy design elements Apple is testing is a camera configuration featuring vertically-arranged oval lenses accompanied by peripheral lighting. This approach contrasts with the circular camera arrangement found in Meta’s Ray-Ban smart eyewear collaboration.
The camera system will enable both photography and video recording capabilities. Additionally, the glasses will incorporate microphones and audio speakers for telephony, music playback, and alert notifications.
Powering the device will be a multimodal artificial intelligence engine, featuring Siri voice assistant integration and visual intelligence capabilities. The product will not incorporate augmented reality functionality — a separate AR glasses offering with integrated display technology is under development, though its market introduction timeline extends further into the future.
Challenging Meta’s Market Leadership
Meta presently dominates the smart glasses sector. The category experienced 139% growth year-over-year during the latter half of 2025, with Meta’s product range accounting for the majority of expansion, per Counterpoint Research data.
Apple’s strategy appears focused on developing an immediately distinguishable product that differentiates itself from existing market offerings.
Gurman observed that with proper execution — especially regarding a capable Siri implementation — the glasses could replicate the trajectory of the Apple Watch: arriving after competitors but ultimately achieving market dominance.
Apple isn’t the sole company pursuing innovative AI-driven hardware. The organization is simultaneously expected to introduce a foldable iPhone model in September 2026, alongside camera-equipped AirPods, a smart home display device, and a wearable pendant accessory.
Apple targets a product announcement by the conclusion of 2026 or early months of 2027, with customer shipments commencing by the end of 2027.
