On Monday, March 16, Apple revealed the AirPods Max 2, representing the inaugural major revision to its premium over-ear headphones since their December 2020 debut.
Powering the latest iteration is Apple’s H2 chip, the same processor that runs the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4. This silicon upgrade introduces multiple capabilities to the Max series that the original version lacked.
According to Apple, the refreshed headphones feature Active Noise Cancellation that performs up to 1.5 times better than its predecessor. This enhancement stems from the H2 chip combined with advanced computational audio processing.
The improved ANC specifically addresses common environmental sounds such as jet engines and public transit noise. Additionally, Transparency mode has been refined for a more authentic listening experience.
Regarding sound reproduction, Apple integrated a newly designed high dynamic range amplifier. The tech giant claims this component enhances sonic detail while maintaining the signature audio character established by the first-generation AirPods Max.
Breaking new ground for the Max product line, this generation introduces support for 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio playback. Users can access this premium audio format through the bundled USB-C cable.
Exclusive Capabilities Making Their AirPods Max Debut
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation represent fresh additions to the Max family. The AirPods Pro second generation has offered these functions since its release.
Live Translation, driven by Apple Intelligence, enables instant cross-language dialogue. Voice Isolation leverages H2’s computational audio to eliminate background interference during phone conversations.
Conversation Awareness intelligently reduces audio levels when the user begins talking with someone in their vicinity. Adaptive Audio dynamically modifies ANC and Transparency settings according to environmental conditions.
Content creators gain access to two specialized tools. Studio-quality audio capture caters to podcasters, journalists, and musicians conducting interviews or recording sessions. The Camera remote function allows photographers to control iPhone or iPad camera shutters via the Digital Crown.
Gamers will appreciate enhanced performance as well. Paired with Game Mode across iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices, the headphones deliver minimized audio lag.
Cost, Color Options, and Launch Timeline
The AirPods Max 2 carry a $549 starting price in the United States. This matches the original model’s launch price, maintaining consistent pricing across generations.
Consumers can choose from five color variants: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Pre-ordering begins March 25 through Apple’s online store and mobile app. In-store availability and customer deliveries commence in early April.
Apple highlighted environmental progress with the new model. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth materials throughout all magnetic components and feature ear cushions made entirely from recycled polyester.
New Apple Music customers receive a complimentary three-month subscription when purchasing AirPods Max 2.
