Shares of Spotify (SPOT) rallied 8.6% Thursday following the company’s announcement of fourth-quarter operating income projections that topped analyst estimates. The streaming platform’s stock climbed even as broader technology shares declined amid concerns over AI infrastructure investments.
The music streaming service added premium subscribers during the third quarter, though top-line results and per-share earnings came in below analyst projections. Company leadership outlined expectations for improved operating performance in the current quarter.
Streaming Platform Shares Rise on Earnings Guidance
Management projects operating income of €820 million for the fourth quarter, exceeding the LSEG analyst consensus of €813.4 million. The company also anticipates quarterly revenue of €5.2 billion.
The September quarter delivered operating income of €672 million, closely aligned with Visible Alpha’s €671.8 million projection. Quarterly revenue came in at €4.97 billion against forecasts calling for €4.98 billion. Per-share earnings of €2.48 trailed the €2.80 consensus estimate. The company posted a gross margin of 33%.
Executives attributed the shortfall to elevated spending on marketing initiatives, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence development. These investments mirror broader industry trends, including Meta’s recent AI launches. Leadership characterized the elevated expenses as short-term in nature.
Paid Subscriber Projections Exceed Analyst Targets
The platform closed September with 306 million premium subscribers following a net gain of six million during the three-month period. Management expects this figure to reach 316 million by the end of December, above the Wall Street consensus of 314.7 million.
Total monthly active users climbed to 788 million, representing a 1% increase from the June quarter. The company forecasts 818 million users by year-end, marginally below the analyst estimate of 819 million.
Competing streaming platforms confront distinct challenges. Netflix lowered its advertising revenue forecast earlier this week. Spotify’s updated guidance emphasizes expansion in paid music subscriptions.
Artificial Intelligence Features Drive Ongoing Investment
The service deploys AI DJ functionality and prompt-driven playlist generation to enhance music discovery for users. The platform has integrated its offering with third-party AI applications to process listening requests.
Management monitors emerging AI music platforms, including Suno and Udio. The company is building licensed capabilities that allow fans to generate covers and remixes.
Co-CEO Alex Norström emphasized the company’s willingness to deploy capital when identifying promising growth avenues. Leadership anticipates spending levels will normalize following the recent uptick in marketing and infrastructure costs.
Licensing Agreements Enable AI-Generated Remixes
The streaming service finalized an agreement with Believe Tuesday covering its upcoming paid remix feature. This arrangement extends to TuneCore artists. Participating musicians retain approval rights over their catalog usage and receive royalty payments.
Comparable licensing arrangements now encompass Universal Music Group, Merlin and Kobalt. The platform intends to launch the feature as a Premium subscription add-on while addressing questions about AI revenue and spending.
Spotify has yet to announce pricing or availability dates for the new tool. The company maintains its focus on expanding audio offerings while pursuing subscriber expansion and enhanced profitability.
