Third-Quarter Financial Performance Exceeds Prior Year
Goldman Sachs posted diluted earnings of $17.01 per share, marking a significant advance from $12.25 in the comparable quarter of the previous year. The figure represented a sequential decline from second-quarter earnings of $20.98 per share. Return on average common shareholders’ equity reached 18.7% on an annualized basis.
Through the initial nine months of 2026, the institution accumulated $56.24 billion in revenue and $17.55 billion in net earnings. Book value per common share expanded 4.2% during this timeframe to $372.64. The results demonstrated enhanced banking operations and improved profitability metrics versus the prior year period.
Operating expenses climbed 20% year-over-year to $11.31 billion, driven primarily by elevated transaction-based costs and staff compensation. Credit loss provisions totaled $368 million, attributable to wholesale loan impairments. Despite these expense increases, the firm improved its nine-month efficiency ratio to 59.4% from 62.1% previously.
Banking and Trading Operations Drive Divisional Results
The Global Banking & Markets segment produced $13.46 billion in quarterly revenue, reflecting a 32% annual increase. Investment banking fees expanded 21%, bolstered by completed merger activity and heightened underwriting volumes. Initial public offerings and secondary equity sales further strengthened divisional performance.
Equities revenue jumped 72% annually, propelled by robust financing services and derivatives trading operations. Conversely, FICC revenue remained relatively flat despite mixed results across product categories. Gains in currencies and commodities trading helped counterbalance softer mortgage, credit, and interest rate performance.
Asset & Wealth Management revenue grew 14% compared to the prior year, supported by elevated management and incentive fee income. Rising average assets under supervision contributed to stronger recurring revenue streams during the period. Nevertheless, diminished investment returns and private banking revenue partially constrained the segment’s expansion.
Firm Declares Dividend and Executes Capital Return Program
Goldman Sachs announced a quarterly dividend of $5.00 per common share on October 12, 2026. Payment is scheduled for December 30 to shareholders of record as of December 2. The declaration continued the firm’s consistent capital distribution approach through dividends and stock repurchases.
Throughout the third quarter, the institution distributed $4.49 billion to common shareholders via its capital return initiative. Stock buybacks comprised $3 billion of this total, while common dividends accounted for the remaining $1.49 billion. The company sustained its shareholder distribution strategy concurrent with increased banking activity.
Meanwhile, average global core liquid assets expanded to $574 billion from $555 billion in the preceding quarter. Employee headcount rose 3% sequentially, reflecting the seasonal timing of graduate recruitment programs. The investment banking backlog contracted from second-quarter levels despite stronger completed transaction volumes.
