The Blockchain Association announced Summer Mersinger will vacate her position as chief executive, effective October 16, 2026.
As a premier Washington-based lobbying organization, the Blockchain Association champions digital asset companies and policy positions throughout the cryptocurrency sector.
Following Mersinger’s departure, Kristin Smith assumes the chief executive position on a temporary basis. Smith originally guided the association from its 2018 inception until stepping aside approximately 15 months prior.
Leadership Succession Details
Smith transitioned away from the Blockchain Association previously to helm the Solana Policy Institute as its president.
Despite relinquishing day-to-day CEO duties, she maintained her board presidency at the Blockchain Association. Her interim appointment means she’ll simultaneously oversee both entities.
Organization representatives verified Smith will maintain dual leadership roles, balancing responsibilities at the Solana Policy Institute alongside her interim Blockchain Association duties.
Mersinger assumed leadership of the Blockchain Association in June 2025 following her tenure as a Commodity Futures Trading Commission commissioner.
Her CFTC departure occurred three years ahead of her second term’s scheduled conclusion, enabling her swift transition to cryptocurrency advocacy.
Legislative Setback Precedes Announcement
This executive transition arrives approximately one week following a significant congressional disappointment for cryptocurrency interests. Senators declined to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
The proposed legislation required sufficient support for procedural advancement. Neither Democratic nor Republican lawmakers provided adequate votes for progression.
Political analysts anticipate the measure won’t resurface for consideration before 2027. The Blockchain Association vigorously advocated for legislative approval during deliberations.
Mersinger’s exit announcement avoided mentioning the Clarity Act directly. She highlighted alternative accomplishments achieved during her leadership tenure.
Her statement emphasized contributions to the GENIUS Act regarding stablecoin frameworks, alongside advancing regulatory transparency efforts at both the Securities and Exchange Commission and CFTC.
“I came here from the CFTC because I believed this industry deserved clear rules of the road and a credible, unified voice making the case for them in Washington,” Mersinger said.
Smith characterized Mersinger’s leadership period as encompassing crypto policy’s most transformative era. This timeframe witnessed the GENIUS Act becoming America’s inaugural comprehensive cryptocurrency legislation.
The Blockchain Association hasn’t addressed inquiries regarding Mersinger’s post-departure intentions. Her professional plans following the year-end transition remain undisclosed.
Smith officially resumes CEO responsibilities on October 16, 2026. Given the interim designation, the organization may initiate recruitment efforts for permanent executive leadership subsequently.
