Akamai Technologies, Inc., AKAM
Breaking Down the Akamai-Anthropic Partnership
Under the arrangement, Akamai will deliver cloud computing infrastructure and related software services to Anthropic throughout a seven-year period. The partnership carries an initial valuation of $11.6 billion.
The contract contains provisions allowing expansion by an additional $9 billion should Anthropic require enhanced computational capacity. Such an expansion would elevate the total contract value to approximately $20 billion.
Within the deal framework, Akamai issued warrants to Anthropic representing roughly 5% of its outstanding common shares. About 2% of these warrants are anticipated to vest immediately.
The balance of 3% in warrants is contingent upon Anthropic committing an extra $9 billion toward cloud services during the seven-year contract period. This partnership aims to accommodate expanding computational demands.
Semiconductor and Energy Sectors Move in Opposite Directions
Additional chip and artificial intelligence-focused equities posted advances Friday morning. Advanced Micro Devices climbed approximately 2.5%.
The semiconductor manufacturer has appreciated over 12% during the current week. The company recently surpassed a $1 trillion market capitalization milestone for the first time in its history.
Intel advanced nearly 2%. Marvell Technology increased more than 2%, while Nvidia registered a modest gain below 1%.
Energy sector equities trended in the opposing direction. Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, Exxon Mobil, and Chevron each declined more than 1%.
The selloff occurred as Brent crude oil futures decreased 1.6% to settle at $98.55 per barrel. Market participants also monitored discussions regarding potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In separate market activity, Barry Diller’s People Inc. advanced more than 8%. The rally came after the Wall Street Journal disclosed that MGM Resorts is engaged in preliminary discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the company.
People had previously withdrawn its acquisition proposal for MGM earlier this week. A transaction proceeding in the reverse direction would fundamentally alter that dynamic.
Additional Notable Market Movers
Select Water Solutions appreciated roughly 6% after disclosing an agreement to acquire privately held Pilot Water Solutions. The transaction is structured at $700 million, combining cash and equity consideration.
Fathom Holdings and Neighborhood Intelligence both posted gains following their announcement to evaluate a revised transaction framework. The new structure would supersede their previous merger agreement and incorporate digital assets associated with tZERO Group.
Not all equities posted advances Friday. Scholastic shares tumbled 12% after the publishing company disclosed quarterly losses exceeding analyst projections.
Scholastic documented a 4% year-over-year revenue contraction. Notwithstanding the decline, company management maintained its full-year financial guidance without revision.
Zscaler shares retreated 4% following the cybersecurity firm’s announcement of a leadership transition in its Chief Revenue Officer position. Ross Tackett is scheduled to assume the role effective October 1, 2026.
Market participants remained attentive to Treasury yields and crude oil prices as the trading session commenced. Both metrics had moderated from recent elevated levels entering Friday’s trading.
