Strategy (MSTR) shares experienced significant downward pressure Monday, declining nearly 4% as the stock traded at $137.30 during morning hours before settling at $137.35 by market close, representing a $5.46 or 3.82% decrease.
The stock touched its session low at $135.38, marking a substantial retreat from its 52-week peak of $365.21.
The primary catalyst behind Monday’s decline was Bitcoin’s weakness. The flagship cryptocurrency tumbled below the psychologically important $80,000 mark, finishing the session around $79,116, representing a decline of over 1.5%. Given that MSTR functions as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin exposure, cryptocurrency price movements typically have an amplified effect on the company’s share price.
Macroeconomic conditions provided additional headwinds. The Friday release of August employment figures revealed 162,000 jobs were added to the economy, significantly surpassing the consensus estimate of 55,000. Such robust labor market data increases the likelihood of additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases, creating unfavorable conditions for speculative assets like cryptocurrencies and related equities.
Broader equity indices mirrored this risk-off sentiment. The S&P 500 declined 0.4%, the Nasdaq Composite retreated 0.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.8%.
Share Repurchase Authorization Doubled, But Common Shareholders Excluded
The company disclosed that its board of directors authorized an expansion of the Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program, doubling the authorization from $1 billion to $2 billion. While this initially appears shareholder-friendly, the details reveal limitations.
The enhanced repurchase program exclusively covers STRC preferred stock. Throughout the most recent reporting period, zero shares of MSTR common stock were acquired under this program, meaning regular equity holders received no tangible benefit from the authorization increase.
Chief Executive Michael Saylor shared analysis on Bitcoin Credit performance metrics, highlighting that STRC’s Bitcoin Credit spread tightened by a single basis point to reach 53 basis points. His commentary positioned this development as evidence of enhanced stability within the firm’s Bitcoin-collateralized securities structure. Despite this messaging, market participants showed little enthusiasm.
Technical Indicators Signal Mixed Outlook
Examining the technical landscape, MSTR currently trades above both its 20-day moving average ($115.53) and 50-day moving average ($103.51), configurations that typically suggest bullish momentum.
However, the 200-day moving average positioned at $139.09 presents a challenge. With the stock trading marginally below this critical technical level, it’s functioning as resistance that constrains upside movement and prevents meaningful recovery attempts.
Technical oscillators are flashing overbought readings, suggesting vulnerability to additional near-term selling pressure. Analyst projections place the five-day trading range between $132.00 and $143.50, with expectations tilted toward consolidation or further downside in the immediate term.
A constructive development emerged from Canaccord’s research desk, which lifted its price objective for MSTR to $179 from the previous $175 target while reaffirming its Buy rating. Nevertheless, this incremental upgrade proved insufficient to counteract Monday’s selling momentum.
Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury position remains stable with no changes to holdings or reserves, while the 200-day moving average at $139.09 stands as the critical technical threshold requiring monitoring.
