Shares of Affirm Holdings rallied approximately 6% on September 2 following Scotiabank‘s launch of coverage with a Sector Outperform designation and $95 price objective. The stock reached around $74.17, climbing from its previous level of $73.11.
Scotiabank’s central thesis is clear: Wall Street is treating Affirm as if it were a funding-dependent, cyclical lending institution when the business model increasingly resembles a capital-efficient payments infrastructure.
This categorization is significant. Payment networks generally earn higher valuation multiples compared to conventional lenders, and Scotiabank contends Affirm warrants placement in the former group.
Transaction volume continues expanding even as the platform matures, with the bank highlighting that incremental revenue is increasingly converting to operating profit. This demonstrates the operational leverage that equity investors typically reward.
The Affirm Card plays a central role in this transformation. The product is channeling volume toward more frequent, direct-to-consumer transactions while diminishing dependence on individual merchant relationships.
Additionally, the card provides Affirm with richer consumer spending insights, strengthening its underwriting capabilities progressively. Enhanced data translates to superior credit decisionsāa critical advantage for any player in this sector.
Capital Structure and Credit Performance
Regarding capital management, Affirm has broadened its committed funding capacity, enhanced asset-backed securities pricing, and decreased the proportion of equity capital allocated to its platform portfolio.
Credit risk remains the primary concern, though Scotiabank observed that recent loan cohort performance indicates losses are manageable and appropriately provisioned. This provides important comfort for investors previously worried about asset quality.
Dilutive effects from warrants and equity-based compensation are diminishing, which should produce cleaner reported earnings in upcoming periods. Leadership has established goals of reaching $100 billion in yearly transaction volume alongside expanded profit margins.
Top-line revenues increased 32% compared to the prior year over the trailing twelve months, and the firm has achieved GAAP profitability. This represents an important benchmark Affirm has been pursuing.
Wave of Analyst Price Target Increases
Scotiabank isn’t alone in its optimistic outlook. Multiple other research firms have boosted their price projections after Affirm delivered impressive fourth-quarter performance.
Cantor Fitzgerald elevated its objective to $97, while Bernstein SocGen Group increased theirs to $110. TD Cowen established a $124 target, pointing to a significant earnings-per-share surprise that benefited partially from tax advantages.
BMO Capital lifted its target to $101 alongside an Outperform designation. Cantor Fitzgerald also maintained an Overweight stance with an $88 objective.
Affirm’s fourth-quarter performance exceeded expectations on both revenue and profit metrics, with fiscal 2027 projections calling for transaction volume of $64 billion and revenue approximating 8.49% of GMV.
The prevailing analyst consensus currently indicates roughly 43% upside opportunity from recent trading levels. Despite this optimism, shares remain down approximately 6% for the year-to-date period.
