- Visa brings its extensive global payment infrastructure to the table, while Dunamu offers expertise in blockchain technology and digital asset platforms.
- Implementation of any commercial offering hinges on South Korea’s developing regulatory framework covering stablecoins, payment systems, anti-money-laundering protocols and currency exchange guidelines.
Dunamu, which operates South Korea’s dominant cryptocurrency trading platform Upbit, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Visa to develop stablecoin payment infrastructure, cross-border transfer solutions and AI-based financial services. The arrangement currently exists in its preliminary phase, with specific product offerings, deployment schedules and technical architectures yet to be determined. This approach allows both organizations to evaluate market appetite and regulatory conditions before committing to full-scale implementation.
Strategic Alliance Focuses on Digital Payment Innovation
Dunamu will leverage its blockchain expertise and digital asset platform capabilities within this partnership. Visa contributes its worldwide payment network infrastructure as the two entities examine various settlement frameworks and payment architectures for digital currencies.
Both organizations have kept their options open regarding stablecoin selection, blockchain platform choice, custody arrangements and transaction processing methods. The agreement establishes a foundation for investigation and proof-of-concept development rather than an immediately deployable service for Upbit’s customer base.
The partnership also encompasses potential integration with Open USD, designated as OUSD. Open Standard unveiled this dollar-backed digital currency in June, positioning it for international payment applications and cross-border financial flows.
Dunamu has publicly stated it maintains no issuance capacity for OUSD. The company’s involvement centers on potential participation within the broader Open Standard framework, with any OUSD deployment under the Visa collaboration requiring additional strategic planning.
Visa Expands Digital Currency Infrastructure
Visa has broadened its stablecoin settlement capabilities across multiple geographic regions, blockchain networks and currency denominations. The payments giant reported its stablecoin settlement operations achieved an annualized throughput of approximately $7 billion by March 2026.
The alliance may extend into AI-powered payment systems. Visa has been engineering solutions for agentic commerce, enabling artificial intelligence platforms to discover options, choose services and initiate financial transactions within predefined user parameters.
Any commercial deployment must align with South Korea’s evolving digital asset regulations. Government authorities continue evaluating frameworks for stablecoin creation, payment oversight, anti-money-laundering standards, identity verification protocols and foreign-exchange compliance measures.
Dunamu has previously pursued blockchain-based remittance initiatives and stablecoin ventures alongside financial institutions and technology collaborators. Its dominant position in South Korea’s crypto market positions the company favorably for future payment infrastructure development once regulatory approval materializes.
The critical milestone ahead involves establishing a concrete pilot program or commercial roadmap. Dunamu and Visa must specify which stablecoin receives support, identify target markets, select the underlying blockchain platform, define custody protocols and establish customer eligibility criteria.
Pending these clarifications, the partnership functions as an exploratory framework. The collaboration provides Visa with entry opportunities into South Korea’s digital asset ecosystem while offering Dunamu additional pathways to validate stablecoin technology, remittance capabilities and AI-enhanced payment platforms.
