Key Highlights
- In July, Marvell broadened its collaboration with Google to encompass several custom AI chip initiatives within Google’s TPU infrastructure
- The partnership scope includes storage controllers, AI inference accelerators, network interface controllers, memory interface controllers, and near-memory computing solutions
- On August 18, Google obtained a warrant allowing purchase of up to 58.97 million Marvell shares at $206.58 apiece
- Wedbush’s Matt Bryson notes the arrangement isn’t zero-sum and may create opportunities for various chip manufacturers
- Reports suggest Google is considering a comparable custom chip collaboration with AMD
Marvell Technology (MRVL) has captured investor attention following the announcement of an expanded collaboration with Google (GOOGL) focused on custom AI semiconductor development. Shares of MRVL declined 6.7% on the news.

The enhanced collaboration, finalized on July 29, encompasses numerous semiconductor initiatives connected to Google’s TPU infrastructure. The partnership addresses AI inference accelerators, storage controllers, network interface controllers, memory interface controllers, and advanced near-memory computing solutions.
Matt Bryson from Wedbush Securities interprets the arrangement as evidence that custom semiconductor solutions currently hold an “advantageous position” in the market. He emphasized that firms possessing robust custom chip design expertise and intellectual property portfolios are strategically positioned in today’s landscape.
Bryson challenged the notion that Marvell‘s advancement necessarily disadvantages competitors. His analysis suggests the emerging custom silicon trend is “not necessarily a zero-sum game,” indicating that Broadcom, AMD, and Nvidia won’t automatically suffer setbacks from Marvell’s strengthened relationship with Google.
Warrant Issuance Strengthens Financial Alignment
Under the terms of the broadened partnership, Marvell granted Google a warrant dated August 18. This instrument provides Google with the option to acquire up to 58.97 million shares of Marvell stock at $206.58 per share.
This financial arrangement establishes a direct alignment between Google‘s interests and Marvell’s corporate performance. The structure demonstrates a deeper, more sustained commitment extending beyond conventional single-project supplier relationships.
The warrant provision represents an unusual element in chip partnerships. By linking Google’s potential financial gains to Marvell’s equity performance, the arrangement differs markedly from traditional vendor contracts.
AMD Enters the Conversation
This week’s Marvell announcement isn’t the sole development in Google’s chip strategy. Bryson has also addressed emerging reports suggesting AMD might be enlisted for development work on upcoming Google TPU generations.
He characterized a prospective AMD-Google semiconductor collaboration as “significant,” indicating Google’s deliberate strategy to expand its custom silicon vendor ecosystem.
While Broadcom remains Google’s primary TPU collaborator, the recent activity surrounding both Marvell and AMD demonstrates Google’s intention to broaden its supplier network as AI chip requirements escalate.
Marvell’s enhanced involvement now extends across numerous program categories rather than focusing on a single aspect of the TPU architecture. Wedbush views this comprehensive scope as particularly noteworthy.
The collaboration encompasses everything from inference processing to memory solutions, establishing Marvell with a more substantial presence throughout Google’s AI infrastructure roadmap.
In his client communication this week, Bryson positioned the announcement as validation that specialized semiconductor designers face strong demand, rather than presenting unexpected developments.
The Google warrant was issued by Marvell on August 18, shortly following the expanded partnership formalization on July 29.
