Super Micro Computer, Inc., SMCI
The rally stemmed from growing enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence infrastructure requirements and fresh analysis of the company’s most recent preliminary quarterly disclosure, which contained several remarkable figures.
According to Supermicro’s announcement, the firm secured over $60 billion in fresh AI server contracts during its fiscal fourth quarter that concluded on June 30. This achievement propelled its order backlog to an all-time high as it enters fiscal year 2027.
Quarterly revenue figures are anticipated to arrive near the lower boundary of the $11 billion to $12.5 billion projected range. While that particular metric may underwhelm some observers, the profitability narrative tells a more compelling story.
The company now forecasts gross profit margins between 15% and 17%. This represents a stark contrast to the earlier guidance range of merely 8.2% to 8.4%, effectively doubling the margin expectations communicated to shareholders previously.
Market Hesitation Despite Strong Order Numbers
Even with the substantial order pipeline, investor enthusiasm remains measured. Supermicro acknowledged that not every order in the backlog represents a guaranteed commitment, with potential cancellations or postponements possible.
Additionally, the company intends to raise $7 billion through equity-based financing vehicles to acquire the components required for fulfilling these orders. This capital raise presents dilution risks that current shareholders must consider.
Further complicating matters, an independent board investigation examining specific transactions tied to suspected export regulation violations remains in progress. The preliminary financial data has also not undergone independent auditor scrutiny yet.
These uncertainties help explain why shares trade at a price-to-earnings multiple of merely 16.47, alongside a PEG ratio of 0.36, hovering near multiyear valuation floors.
Critical Focus Points for Upcoming Earnings
Market attention now shifts squarely to the August 11 financial results announcement. Shareholders will seek transparency regarding what portion of the $60 billion pipeline translates into confirmed revenue, and whether profitability can sustain at these elevated threshold levels.
The company’s previous quarterly report in May delivered earnings per share of $0.84, surpassing the $0.63 analyst consensus. Revenue reached $10.24 billion, falling short of the $12.39 billion expectation, though it still marked a substantial 122.7% year-over-year expansion.
Wall Street opinion remains divided. Currently, four analysts assign Buy ratings, 12 recommend Hold, and two advise Sell. The consensus price objective stands at $39.21.
Rosenblatt Securities maintains a $45 price objective with a Buy recommendation. Goldman Sachs continues with its Sell rating. Wedbush lowered its target from $42 down to $34 while maintaining a Neutral stance.
Institutional investors control 84.06% of outstanding shares, with multiple funds expanding their positions during the second quarter, notably Baird Financial Group, which boosted its holdings by 54.9%.
The equity’s 50-day moving average sits at $31.56 while the 200-day moving average rests at $30.46, positioning the current trading price squarely between these technical indicators.
