Philip Morris International Inc., PM
The tobacco giant reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.20, exceeding Wall Street’s $2.03 forecast by $0.17. Revenue reached $11.2 billion, comfortably above the anticipated $10.6 billion.
Second-quarter revenue increased 10.4% compared to the prior-year period. This milestone represented the company’s first-ever quarter with net revenues crossing the $11 billion threshold.
The company’s smoke-free portfolio emerged as the primary catalyst for expansion. This division generated revenue growth of 11.7%, while traditional combustible products saw a 9.5% increase.
Robust performance from Zyn nicotine pouches contributed significantly to the results, particularly after securing recent regulatory clearance in the United States. Overall shipment volumes advanced 2.5%, with smoke-free product volumes climbing 7.5%.
International smoke-free operations delivered impressive 14.2% revenue expansion, propelled by 8% volume gains. The company’s IQOS heat-not-burn technology remained the dominant product line within this segment.
Management acknowledged certain challenges affecting performance. Specifically, Japan and Poland were identified as geographic markets where IQOS encountered difficulties throughout the three-month period.
Adjusted earnings per share expanded 15.2% from the $1.91 recorded in the comparable quarter of the previous year. When adjusting for a beneficial three-cent foreign exchange impact, the growth rate stood at 13.6%.
Reported diluted EPS registered at $1.80, representing a 7.7% year-over-year decline. This decrease stemmed from a $511 million non-cash impairment charge associated with the company’s RBH equity investment.
Third Quarter Outlook Falls Short
Looking ahead to Q3, Philip Morris provided adjusted EPS guidance ranging from $2.20 to $2.25. The $2.225 midpoint significantly trailed the analyst consensus estimate of $2.43.
This substantial shortfall triggered the stock’s decline despite the company’s strong quarterly performance. Shares traded down approximately 2.4% during Wednesday morning activity.
Annual Forecast Remains Unchanged
Philip Morris maintained its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS projection within the $8.26 to $8.41 range. This outlook indicates anticipated growth of 9.5% to 11.5% compared to 2025 figures.
On a currency-neutral basis, the guidance suggests growth of 7.5% to 9.5%. Management reduced its estimated favorable currency impact to $0.15 from the previous $0.20 assumption.
The company anticipates full-year organic net revenue growth between 5% and 7%. Organic operating income is forecast to expand 7% to 9%.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak commented that the organization “delivered outstanding results in the second quarter, driving net revenues to over $11 billion for the first time with excellent growth across all headline metrics.”
