Market participants attribute the decline to a confluence of factors: investor caution before the July 29 earnings release, persistent margin headwinds, and recent downgrades to analyst price projections.
Wall Street consensus calls for Chipotle to deliver $0.32 in earnings per share for the second quarter, marking a roughly 3% decrease compared to the year-ago quarter.
Margin deterioration remains a critical concern for CMG shareholders. The first quarter of 2026 saw operating margin compress to 12.9%, a substantial pullback from the 16.7% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025. At the restaurant level, operating margin slipped to 23.7% from 26.2%.
First-quarter revenue increased 7.4% on a year-over-year basis to reach $3.09 billion, while comparable restaurant sales posted a modest 0.5% gain. Earnings per share landed at $0.24, meeting analyst expectations.
Wall Street Adjusts Price Expectations
On the analyst front, Citigroup preserved its Buy recommendation but lowered its price objective from $46 to $45 on July 13. Mizuho maintained its Outperform stance and raised its target modestly to $41. Morgan Stanley holds an Equal Weight rating alongside a $37 price target.

Among the 35 analysts tracking Chipotle, 24 maintain Strong Buy ratings while nine recommend Hold positions. The average price target of $42.82 represents considerable upside from current trading levels.
The stock is currently positioned near the bottom of its 52-week trading range of $28.04 to $54.20.
Institutional Investors Increase Holdings
Notwithstanding recent share price weakness, institutional capital has been flowing into CMG. Assetmark Inc. expanded its stake by 63.2% during the first quarter, purchasing 216,277 additional shares to bring its total position to 558,547 shares valued at approximately $17.88 million.
Multiple smaller investment firms initiated new CMG positions throughout Q4 2025 and Q1 2026. Institutional ownership now accounts for 91.3% of the company’s shares outstanding.
