Universal Pictures’ latest gaming adaptation, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, launched with a commanding $372.5 million worldwide gross, representing the industry’s strongest opening since Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered in December 2025.
The Comcast-owned studio released the animated feature to more than 4,000 North American venues. Per-screen averages hit $30,795 — an impressive metric considering the predominantly youth-oriented ticket pricing structure.
During the Easter holiday three-day period, domestic receipts totaled $130.9 million. Industry tracker Comscore projects a five-day domestic cumulative of $190.1 million through the extended opening frame.
Overseas territories contributed an additional $182.4 million, positioning the worldwide launch significantly ahead of competing 2026 releases.
Analyst Eric Handler from Roth forecasted the film would generate between $160 million and $200 million across its initial Wednesday-to-Sunday window, emphasizing Mario’s position as a premier gaming franchise with more than 430 million units sold globally.
The production reunites key talent from the 2023 predecessor, featuring producers Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto, co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, and voice actors Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary retained the runner-up position in its third weekend, collecting $30.7 million. The Ryan Gosling-led science fiction feature now totals $217.2 million domestically with worldwide earnings of $420.7 million. Mexican markets alone contributed $119.4 million to its international performance.
A24’s The Drama claimed third position with a $14.4 million opening across 3,087 locations. The R-rated romantic comedy featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson has already recovered its production costs in opening weekend, with combined international sales adding $28 million.
Additional Weekend Box Office Results
Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers added $5.8 million in its fifth frame, elevating domestic receipts to $149.6 million. The animated film’s worldwide total now stands at approximately $332.2 million, securing a position among 2026’s top three global performers.
Universal’s Reminders of Him completed the top five bracket with $2.2 million.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary collectively represented nearly $192.6 million of the weekend’s $195.7 million domestic top 10 revenue.
