TLDR
- The acquisition of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility in Taiwan has been finalized by Micron
- A second manufacturing plant is planned for the same Tongluo location
- The upcoming fab will match the size of the company’s current Miaoli County operation
- Production will center on advanced DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips
- Development of the second plant is scheduled to commence before fiscal 2026 ends
Micron Technology ($MU) is expanding its footprint in Taiwan significantly. On Monday, the American memory semiconductor manufacturer revealed intentions to construct an additional production facility at the Tongluo location it just acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC).
The chipmaker announced the successful completion of acquiring PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility located in Miaoli County. This transaction provides Micron with a strategic position it intends to strengthen by constructing a second manufacturing plant of comparable size next to the current one.
The additional facility targets increasing production capacity for cutting-edge DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) โ critical memory components that fuel AI accelerators and data center processors.
Groundbreaking is planned to occur by fiscal year 2026’s conclusion, which for Micron extends through late August.
Strengthening HBM Production Capabilities
HBM has emerged as one of the semiconductor sector’s most sought-after products. These memory chips are essential components in hardware from Nvidia and other AI chip manufacturers, where availability has remained constrained.
Micron ranks as the third leading competitor in the HBM market, trailing SK Hynix and Samsung. This Taiwan fab capacity expansion represents a strategic effort to narrow that competitive distance.
The Tongluo site establishes Micron’s second Taiwan production hub, complementing its current Taichung operations.
Operating dual fabs at a single location offers advantages including reduced infrastructure expenses and accelerated production scaling, as utilities, distribution networks, and technical support are already established.
Strategic Value of the Tongluo Facility
The PSMC deal was initially unveiled last year and has now reached completion. PSMC operated as a foundry service provider, and its Tongluo P5 location brings manufacturing space that Micron can adapt for its proprietary DRAM manufacturing processes.
Micron has kept the financial details of the finalized acquisition confidential.
The planned second Tongluo facility would equal the first in scope, although Micron hasn’t disclosed specific capacity numbers for either structure at this point.
Taiwan hosts a substantial share of global advanced semiconductor production, and Micron’s regional expansion positions it nearer to critical partners within the area’s chip supply chain.
MU stock was up 5.13% at the time of reporting.
