The platform is scheduled for unveiling at Nvidia’s GTC developer conference next month in San Jose. The system will be powered by a processor developed by startup Groq.

The backdrop to this announcement is telling. According to a Reuters report earlier this month, OpenAI has voiced frustration regarding performance bottlenecks in Nvidia’s existing hardware—specifically when processing software development requests and enabling AI-to-AI communication.
OpenAI is seeking hardware alternatives capable of handling roughly 10% of its inference operations. Nvidia clearly aims to prevent losing this valuable business segment.
The Race for Superior Inference Chips
Before Nvidia stepped in, OpenAI had begun conversations with two chip companies—Cerebras and Groq—in search of better inference processing solutions.
Those talks were cut short when Nvidia finalized a $20 billion licensing agreement with Groq, effectively removing OpenAI’s ability to partner directly with the startup.
This move demonstrates strategic foresight. Through licensing Groq’s technology, Nvidia not only prevented a competitor from serving OpenAI but also integrated Groq’s chip innovations into its own product ecosystem.
