What is the Petal Card?

The Petal Card is a conventional credit card that allows you to make purchases wherever Visa is accepted. The Petal Card itself is issued by WebBank, Member FDIC.

Petal notes that they are a credit card company started by “people who were sick of credit card companies”. Essentially, the Petal Card aims to provide a platform for US consumers to build their credit score in a sensible and controlled manner.

This is especially useful if you are at the very start of your credit journey, and thus, you do not have a credit score at all. The Petal Card comes with a number of benefits, all of which center on a potential credit limit of between $500 and $10,000.

Moreover, the card does not come with any annual fees, late payment fees, or in the words of the company themselves “any other kind of fee”. You will, of course, be required to pay interest on outstanding balances. At the time of writing, this comes with a variable APR that ranges from 14.49% – 25.49%.

The Petal Card also comes with a cash back rewards program that starts at 1% on eligible purchases. However after making 6 on-time monthly payments, your cash back amount will increase to 1.25% and 12 on-time monthly payments will increase to 1.5%.

In this sense, not only will your on-time repayments be reported to the main three credit rating bureaus – subsequently giving you the chance of improving your credit score, but you can also increase the amount of cash back that you get on your eligible purchases.

So now that you know what the Petal Card is, in the next section of our review we are going to explore eligibility requirements.

Am I Eligible for the Petal Card?

First and foremost, when you initially see if you are pre-approved for the card via the Petal Card platform, this will be executed as a soft credit inquiry.

In layman terms, this means that irrespective of whether or not you are prequalified, the search won’t impact your credit score. However, if you are prequalified for the card, and you subsequently decide to submit an application, you will receive a hard credit inquiry on your credit report which may impact your credit score.

Nevertheless, in terms of the minimum eligibility requirements,  Petal notes that the decision-making process is potentially based on a number of key variables.

For example, the platform will initially evaluate what information they are able to extract from your credit report.

Some applicants will be asked to link their bank accounts in order to assess your current financial profile, including your inflows – such as your income, and your outflows – such as regular bills and payments.

This ultimately presents an opportunity for borrowers that are looking to obtain a credit card, but are typically turned down because they don’t have a sufficient enough credit history to be considered.

So now that you have a better understanding of what is looked at when you apply, in the next section of our review we are going to explore fees.

Petal Card Features

How Much Does the Petal Card cost? Fees and APR%

First and foremost, the Petal Card does not come with any fees whatsoever .

As such, you will not be required to pay any application or annual fees, nor are any late payment fees charged. With that being said, we sought to explore how much interest you are likely to pay if approved.

In a nutshell, the Petal Card comes with a variable APR that ranges from 14.49% – 25.49%.

The specific APR that you are offered will depend on a number of key factors, such as your income, credit score, and historical relationship with credit.

In other words, if you have a consistently good track-record of always paying your debts on-time, and you have a good income, then you stand a much better chance of getting closer to the 14.49% APR rate.

However, at the other end of the spectrum, it must be noted that as long as you always pay your Petal Card balance off in full at the end of each month, you won’t be receive any interest charges.

In fact, this is exactly what you should aim to do if you are applying for the Petal Card with the long-term view of building and improving your credit score.

Finally, much in the same way as your respective APR rate, the credit limit that you are offered will be based on your overall credit worthiness. To clarify, credit limits can range from $500, up to a maximum limit of $10,000.

So now that we’ve covered fees and APR, in the next section of our Petal Card review we are going to look at cash back rewards.

What Cash Back Rewards Does the Petal Card Offer?

If you are approved for the Petal Card, you will instantly have access to the cards’s 1% cash back reward program. Although there are no specific limits to the amount of cash back you can claim, it can only be on eligible purchases.

One of the great things about the Petal Card is that you also have the chance to increase the amount of cash back you are able to redeem if you consistently meet your payments on-time.

For example, after you make 6 on-time monthly payments, your cash back amount increases to 1.25%. For making 12 on-time monthly payments, it increases to a maximum of 1.5%. Once again, this is further motivation to ensure that you always meet your monthly repayments in good time.

In terms of redeeming your Petal Card cash back rewards, you typically have two options. You can either redeem the cash back against your statement, or alternatively, request a check.

Take note, if opting for the latter, this needs to be at least $20. Furthermore, there might be instances where you are not permitted to redeem your cash back rewards – especially if your account is deemed to not be in good standing.

For example, Petal notes that if your monthly payment is overdue, your balance is less than the cash back you intend to redeem or you do not pay your minimum payment, then you will not be able to redeem your cash back.

Improve Your Credit Score

As per the Petal website – “with responsible spending and on-time payments, you can grow your credit score.” Before we explain the fundamentals, it is important to note that Petal has no input in your underlying credit score, nor can it guarantee that you will achieve your goal of building or improving your score.

Instead, Petal will report the last payment you make monthly to the main three credit rating bureaus. Notably, this includes Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. In theory, at least, by always meeting your repayments on-time, the aforementioned credit bureaus will look at this favorably.

Track Your Credit Score

However, they will also look at other key metrics when assessing whether or not to increase your credit score – such as how much credit you are currently utilizing, and whether or not you have recently made any other credit-based applications.

Nevertheless, the good news for you is that Petal supports AutoPay. For those unaware, this allows you to set up an electronic debit agreement via your checking account, subsequently allowing lenders to take your monthly payments automatically. In doing so, you can always ensure that you make your repayments on-time, on the proviso that you have the required funds in your bank account to cover the payment.

The Petal App

Petal offers a fully-fledged mobile app, which is available to download for free across iOS and Android devices. The app allows you to keep track of your spending with ease. You can also view an estimate in dollars of how much interest you will owe if you select to pay less than your full balance.

Moreover, not only can you set and view budget/spending plans, but you can also access your current credit score. In terms of security, the Petal app also comes with a number of important safety controls. This includes the ability to log-in via Biometric ID, and automatically freeze your credit card in the event that it is lost or stolen.

Customer Service and Public Reviews

The Petal customer support team operates on 24/7 basis, which is great.

The easiest way to get in touch with the team is to contact them via email at:

In terms of public reviews, the Petal app has an excellent rating on both the Google Play and Apple Stores.

Petal Card – The Verdict?

In summary, the Petal Card is absolutely ideal if you are looking to build your credit score.

Although the platform cannot guarantee that your score will be improved, Petal will at the very least report of all your on-time payments. This – alongside a number of other key metrics, is viewed very favorably by the main three main credit rating bureaus.

We also like the fact that you can earn cash back on eligible purchases. While the credit card initially comes with a 1% cash back program on eligible purchases, you increase this to 1.25% and 1.5% when you make 6 and 12 on-time monthly payments, respectively.

It is also notable that the card does not come with any fees at all, other than your respective APR rate. As such, there is no requirement to pay annual fees, nor will you be charged a late payment fee.

Finally, we also found the Petal mobile application of great use, especially the really useful interest estimation calculator, which allows you to see how much interest you’ll end up paying, based on the next payment that you plan to make.
